accommodation of the said Nethersole and Alice Memorial Maternity Hospitals by Chinese patients makes it imperative to erect new and separate buildings for the housing of the existing students and for the reception of new pupils.

That a sum of twelve thousand dollars is being collected by the promoters of the Training Institute for native nurses and midwives for the erection of the necessary buildings, of which amount fully one-half has already been pro- -mised, and there is every prospect of obtaining the rest of the subscriptions within a reasonable time.

That plans have been prepared by Lesars.

Denison, Ram and Gibbs, authorised architects, to carry out the aforesaid scheme; but as there is no suitable site in the neigh- -bourhood of the said Hospitals which could be acquired for the erection of the new quarters, your petitioners venture to ap- -proach Your Excellency for a free grant of a certain piece of Crown Land situate at the back of the Ho Miu Ling Hospital (I.L. No. 1709) containing a total area of 6,000 square feet or there- -abouts and which is more particularly delineated on one of the plans thereon coloured red.

That the new buildings when completed will

afford ample accomodation for 24 women-students and living

quarters for the Matron in charge of the Institution.

7.

That at your petitioners' request a return

has been drawn up by the Medical Superintendent of the said

Hospitals showing the number of women-students that are going

through a three years' course of training and who are being

housed either in the Nethersole or the Alice Memorial Maternity

Hospital; the number of applicants for admittance but who on

account of the want of rooms, has not yet been admitted; and the

number of nurses and midwives who have received a full training

in the Institute and have obtained Government Certificates grant-

-ed
